I am trying to create a formula that will count the number of people responsible obtaining gold medals at an event:

Athlete Position
Simon 1st
Peter 2nd
John 1st
Simon 1st
Peter 2nd
John 1st

So I need to create a formula that says how many people were responsible for the gold medals obtained.

In this case there were 4 gold medals but 2 individuals were responsible for them.

Hope it makes sense.

Excel Facts

How to total the visible cells?
From the first blank cell below a filtered data set, press Alt+=. Instead of SUM, you will get SUBTOTAL(9,)
