Text Box in a chart not updattng - figured it out but has anyone seen this or know how to avoid it?

I have a chart on a separate worksheet that has 4 text boxes on it

The values in the text box are linked to cells in another worksheet in the same workbook

Normally they update automatically in Excel 2003

I noticed in loading a working file to Excel 2013 that the text box did not update - it was frozen regardless of the values in the linked worksheet cells

To fix this, I had to unprotect the chart, then go to each cell individually and edit the cell and hit enter without actually changing a value in the text box formula

This had the effect of unfreezing the function

I then protected the chart and it worked fine

Any thoughts on this glitch or how to avoid it?
