Trouble Linking Cell Values from One Sheet to Another

I am using an old file I have updated for a new task since the old file has the format needed. My question is when I set up a formula in a cell on one sheet that points to the value of a cell in another sheet of the same file using =Sheet2!D20, this does not always work (I am not able to click into the cell of the second sheet); is the cell locked on one of the sheets? I have checked everywhere I know to try to get this to work in this file. I am using Excel 2000 SP3 and if I create a new file, I do not have the problem.

Thank you for any help you can offer.

When did Power Query debut in Excel?
Although it was an add-in in Excel 2010 & Excel 2013, Power Query became a part of Excel in 2016, in Data, Get & Transform Data.
You do not need to manually select the cell on the target sheet in order to complete the formula. You can do exactly as you did here and merely type the formula in the formula bar without ever leaving the first sheet.

For example, if I am on Sheet1, in cell B3 and want to reference (sum) a range on Sheet2, all I need to do is:

1. Select cell B3 on Sheet1
2. Type in the cell or formula bar my formula:
____ =SUM(Sheet2!A1:A100)

(The leading underscore is just to for illustrative indentation)

Welcome to the board!

Yes, you don’t need to select the referenced cell in the source sheet, but maybe it is locked: Tools – Protection. If it is protected Protections first choice will be Unprotect Sheet.

A new sheet (file, workbook) is unprotected by default.

Hope this helps
