Trying to concatenate date and time

I have two cells in Excel 2010.

One contains a serial number which converts to the short date format "1/31/2011"

The second cell contains time "10:42:00 PM"

What I want to have is a cell which reads:

"1/31/2011 10:42:00 PM"

that I can use to calculate time intervals.

Concatenating the two cells yields a decimal which can't be displayed as a date.

I've tried googling how to do this but I can't seem to get the right key words ... any suggestions how I get this formula to work?

What is the shortcut key for Format Selection?
Ctrl+1 (the number one) will open the Format dialog for whatever is selected.
