Trying to count something

I am trying to calculate something, and I need some help.
I am trying to add up all of the values of a range of cells if they meet the criteria. This will be done from a previous sheet in the workbook.
So basically I am trying to find out how many "AP""BP"CP""DP" I have in a range of cells.
I know how to countif but it says I am asking for too much info.
I thought about a lookup but I am not real proficient with those.

This is where I want the totals to go, so the AP cell will total all of the criterai I mentioned earlier.

Thanks, I will try it. I think my problem is I am trying to find out if several things meet the criteria and count them. For example, I am trying to find if the range of cells (let's say c5:c10) has an A,B,C,D, or F

Does that make sense or am I dreaming somethign that cannot be done?

sounds like you want to count all of the AP, CP, DP, BP in the range. if that is the case then try this

=COUNTIF(B2:B8,"AP")+COUNTIF(B2:B8,"BP")+COUNTIF(B2:B8,"CP")+COUNTIF(B2:B8,"DP")

OK so here is the problem I am running into now, I am trying to calculate this on one page with info from the previous page '2012'!

where do I add the '2012'! ?
is it before the =countif or is it after it like this =countif('2012'!......
