Hi there,

I have an excel file that i have been using for the past couple of months.
However when i went to open the file today it would not open.

When I go to open it it says that it is downloading it but the spreadsheet does not open.

Is there anything I can do??

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I need to get access to the contents of the spreadsheet

Excel Facts

How to fill five years of quarters?
Type 1Q-2023 in a cell. Grab the fill handle and drag down or right. After 4Q-2023, Excel will jump to 1Q-2024. Dash can be any character.
I have occasionally had a spreadsheet not open and I have been able to e-mail it to myself, save it to a different location and open. Then when it is open I can save as (replace) over the originally location.

Trying to dig a little deeper:

When you say "it doesn't open". Is the Excel icon or workbook name in the Task Tray at the bottom of your screen?

Are you, or maybe somebody else who uses the workbook use Dual (or more) Monitors?

What version of Excel are you using?

Hi Nalani,

Thanks for the reply.

I am using Excel 2007 and the excel icon or workbook name does not appear in the Task Tray. Is is as if you opened a file and closed the workbook and it is just that excel menu screen that is left.

I don't think anyone who uses it uses dual screens. It is baffling because up to February 22nd it worked fine.

Hi Dave
Just had the same problem and found out that another user had done a lot of copy and paste....blowing the file out to 3Mb
Check the file size and see if it has blown to a huge number, if so, it could be corrupt and you may only be open it with a file repair software.
Do a google for Excel file repair and you'll find some softwares that will do one file free.

Try this just for kicks after you try to open it:

1. Click on the View tab at the top
2. Then on Arrange All
3. Click on the box for Windows of active workbook

See if that helps

I'm still going on the assumption that it IS open, but was saved to a non-primary monitor (Dual Monitor setup)

This will correct that issue.

Learned from RoryA some time ago.

When I do this the arrange all button is greyed out so I cannot do this.

Also the file itself 966KB so it is not that big
