Updating links in Excel 2003

A brain buster.

I have set the update links automatically tick box on the calculations tab to false. I have set the link update mode to '-
Don't display the alert and don't update automatic links' and still the workbooks starts updating links without prompting for anything, thus resulting in updating about a million links. This behavior appeared after upgrading to excel 2003. Any advise is welcome!!!

We never managed to solve the issue so much to my regret, I do not have the answer to this problem...
