Updating Links in Excel 97

I have a spreadsheet (for example purposes, Sheet A) with many calculations so I have set it to manual recalculation. Sheet A has some links to another spreadsheet (Sheet B). Sheet B is updated, saved and closed whilst Sheet A is closed. Sheet A is then reopened and F9 pressed to update the calculations and the links. However, it will not update the linked cells unless Sheet B is opened up again.

This is Excel 97 - is it something to do with the version?

Is there any way around this ?

Get help while writing formula
Click the italics "fx" icon to the left of the formula bar to open the Functions Arguments dialog. Help is displayed for each argument.
When SheetA is re-opened, do you get a prompt "The workbook you opened contains automatic links to information in another workbook. Do you want to update this workbook with changes made to the other workbook?" ?

If so, what do you click, Yes, or No?

If not, change the workbook options under menu command Tools/Options/Calculation and ticking the Update Remote References check-box.
