Use of "IF" formual to show correct answer

I am using a SUM formual in a gradebook that must have a value in order for the next quarter in grade to have a correct value.

Example: If the sutdent starts in the second quarter and has no grade in the first quater then his/her grade shows lower for the first quarter was "0" and the actual grade is incorrect.

If the student get 100 in the second quarter then it should show actual 70% of the grade, but if there is "0" or no grade in the first quarter. It will not show correct. It must not count the blank grade or "0" grade in the first quarter.

The formual: =SUM(E2*0.7+M2+N2+O2+P2) for first quarter.
The formual: =SUM(E2+J2)/2*0.7+Q2+R2+S2+T2 for second quarter.

Where E2 is the first quarter grade and J2 is the secons quarter grade.

How can I change it to +If to show 0,0. and get a correct answer.

The *0.7 is for 70 percent of the grade olny.
And the +M, N, O, P are for caluated grade the equal the other 30 percent.

I have tried several ways without success.

Rather than SUM(E2+J2)/2 try AVERAGE(E2,J2) but leave E2 blank. If the student scored zero in the first term put zero in E2, but if there is no result (e.g. started in term 2) then leave E2 blank and my formula will give the correct average.
