In order to encourage improvement in my course, if a student gets a grade on the final exam that is higher than the midterm, that becomes the exam portion (midterm + final, 40%) of the grade. If it's lower, then it's averaged in. The five components of the grade are:

  • Participation, 20%
  • Term paper, 20%
  • Quizzes, 20%
  • Midterm, 20%
  • Final, 20%

Any suggestions for a formula that would substitute the final grade for the midterm if it's higher? Or another way to accomplish this?

Thanks in advance.
Cornelius
