I am wondering how you get over this. If I have a formula starting in say K1 and it is using info starting in A1, how do I use the fill handle to fire it down to say row 5000 if column J is blank. Do I always have to drag it down? As normally if there is info in column J then I can double click it down to the bottom.

Can you AutoAverage in Excel?
There is a drop-down next to the AutoSum symbol. Open the drop-down to choose AVERAGE, COUNT, MAX, or MIN
You could go to the Name Box (left of formula bar) and type in
A1:A5000
Press Enter
Then Press CTRL + D
