Using if statment to confirm if a number is eith odd or even please

Hello,
is there a simple formula that I can use that would distinguish if a number was either odd or even? Basically, if the numbber is odd then I want an if statement to return 'odd' and even 'even'.
This shold take seconds but never come across an easy way before - any takers??
