Using LEFT function on Dates

Hi all,

Stupid question here. How do I convert a date so that when I use the LEFT function I don't get the "3" for the value? Example todays date is 9/24/2002, but the text equivalent is 37523. When I use left I get the 3, not the 9.

=MONTH(A1)

where A1 houses a true date.
