Using the result of a formula in an IF statement

Hi,

If I took the first four characters of 2011/23 using Left(cell,4) and then I asked if that result (2011) equals the value in another cell (2011), I get a False result. Am I not formatting something correctly?????

Try

Left(cell,4)+0

to coerce the result from text to a number.

LEFT function always returns a text-formatted result.....even if it looks like a number, if the data you are extracting is always numeric try converting to a number like this

=LEFT(cell,4)+0

=IF((LEFT(A1,4)+0)=B1,TRUE,FALSE)

seems to work fine given A1 = 2011/23 and B1 = 2011
