Very easy formula question

If I have a number in A1 and a number in B1, what formula do I use to find the average?

=Average(A1:B1)

This is what i thought, but the cells contain the numbers 23 and 39, and the average formula is giving 69 as the answer... Any idea why??

Only thing I can think of is hidden columns, or macro code changing the data

Try This -

suppose if you require your answer in c1 -

ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "=AVERAGE(RC[-2],RC[-1])"

Instead of selecting A1:B2, try:

=AVERAGE(A1,B1)

If that doesn't work then check the format of your columns.
