vlookup, match, index or what

what are the best choices of action?

TAB 1 - column A has a list of official names, VLOOKUPS and basic excel calcs occuring in columns b-h
TAB 2 - has a download with names, unfortunately have subtle differences like abbrev, have spaces, no spaces etc... just subtle differences. But the download has key data that I need to extract to TAB 1. Tab 2 also has more names than I need and TABs 1 + 2 alphabatize differently due to the abbrev. Also the download names are not updateable.

Just point me in the right direction on this one

Examples would help assessing subtle differences... You probably need invoking fuzzy matching:
