Vlookup on second instance of lookup value

I have a list of lookup values where infrequently the same value appears in the Lookup value list that needs to return the second lookup value in the look up range.

e.g.
Lkup Value........LkUpRange
cat..................elephant
dog..................eel........Z
cat...................cat......X
rat....................rat......AA
........................cat....CC
.........................dog....VV

I need the first instance of cat to return X while the second returns CC
The lists are of variable length and the duplicates in the lkup value or lkup range could be a different number of rows apart but the second LkUpValue instance should always return the second instance in the LkUpRange.

Here's the formula in use

Tried it as an array formula but that didn't work either.

E1, just enter and copy across:

=COUNTIF($A$2:$A$7,E$2)

E3, control+shift+enter, not just enter, and copy across then down:

=IF(ROWS(E$3:E3)<=E$1,INDEX($B$2:$B$7,
    SMALL(IF($A$2:$A$7=E$2,ROW($A$2:$A$7)-ROW($A$2)+1),
      ROWS(E$3:E3))),"")

The foregoing set up assumes that we expect one or more entries for any look up value and we want to retieve all of the associated records.

The lookup values are vertical. So if I2 = cat, I3=dog, I4=rat, I5=cat how do I get Z and CC beside the first and second instance of cat? I added a countif per below and returned X against the first instance but blank against the rest.

In you initial post you list cat twice as a look up value. How do you know which look up value occurs twice?

If the entry appears twice (or more) in the lookup values it will always appear the same number of times in the lookup range. The entries will always be in the right order as well. So second instance in the look up needs the second instance in the look up range etc.
