Hi guys,

I am about ready to lose my mind. I need to figure out how to compare 39 different percentages for a membership recruitment campaign. I work for a membership trade association, and our executive director wants us to use "weighted percentages" to even the playing field for this campaign. So I would need to compare a Division/Section with 1,000+ members to one that only has 3. Obviously if we look at % growth the one with only 3 members would have the highest percentage, but they didn't necessarily recruit the most members, so they shouldn't be rewarded for their effort because they had less to do than a larger Division/Section.

Any ideas? I am at a loss as to what to do here. Any help is appreciated. Or if comparing % growth isn't the best way to measure this so that it would be fair, please feel free to provide your ideas as to what might work.

Thank you!

Hi Pinskies, and welcome to the Forum
Now just relax - solving Excel problems can be a challenge, but no need to lose your mind over it - help is at hand in great places like this Forum!

There is no getting away from the statistical fact that 1 added to 2 is 50% growth whereas 10 added to 100 is only 10% growth - so you need to be clear about what it is you are really measuring, what insight you hope to gain, and what behavioural change you are hoping will result.

A couple of alternative measures you could consider are:
1. rank the Division/Sections by No. of new members
2. group the Division/Sections by Membership Total, say 0-15, 51-100, 101-500, 501+, and then compare growth rates among similar sized Divisions/Sections.

HTH

Good luck
