I am new to 2010.

In the past I have always had macro to open and move around my most popular spreadsheets,

these macro still work but I am having trouble changing the Ribbons into a nice format.

I have downloaded the customUIeditior and have managed to create / edit some ribbons attached to sheets but I want to be able to edit the ribbons on personal.xlsb

If I open personal.xlsb in customUIeditor it doesn't show anything?

Any ideas?

You need to write Ribbon customizations in Excel add-in.

You can edit the Personal.xlsb file - did you add a customUI part to it?

probably not.

I started off creating the ribbon from the standard interface and then realised its limitations.

I assumed this ribbon would have been saved in the personal.xlsb

Am I wrong?

You're wrong. You can write modifications into any workbook. I use Excel add-in for constant tab. But if your tab is workbook-specific, then you add this tab and it'll exists only when this workbook is opened.
Try this.

OK So I have got a basic outline of a ribbon but want to edit it using the customUIeditor.

this ribbon should and does open as default with excel.

What is this file and where can I find it?

If you create a ribbon for all workbooks, it is not stored in Personal.xlsb, which is why there was nothing there. It's in your LocalSettings\application data\microsoft\office folder as Excel.officeUI
I don't believe you can edit this using the CustomUI editor - that's not what it's for.
