A Pivot Table Peeve..

This isn't earth shattering, but it still ticks me off...

Why can't I set the default settings for fields in the data portion of a pivot table? They always revert to "Count", even though that's hardly ever what I want to do ("Sum" works over 90% of the time).

It's just annoying when I'm building a table with 20 columns in it, and every time, I have to drop in the data field, then double click, change from Count to Sum, click off, and then repeat the whole process.

I've gone through everything I can think of Tools-Options and in the Pivot Table wizard. Am I missing something?

Ensure that each row of the column has numerical data, with no empty cells, and it defaults to 'sum'.

Other than that, you can put a macro on your toolbar to do it.

Here is one I have. Build the pivot table and after it is presented, highlight the data of the fields you want to format and sum.

Sub sumf_PIVOT_FIELDS()

Application.Dialogs(xlDialogFormatNumber).Show (new_format)
new_format = ActiveCell.NumberFormat
Selection.Name = "SELECTION"

For Each curr_cell In Selection

PIVOT_TABLE = curr_cell.PivotTable.Name
PIVOT_FIELD = curr_cell.PivotField.Name
With ActiveSheet.PivotTables(PIVOT_TABLE).PivotFields(PIVOT_FIELD)
.NumberFormat = new_format
.Function = xlSum
End With
Next

End Sub
