Hi Guys,

I have made a database in MS Excel 2007, I need to make this database accessible by multiusers.

The solution for this I assume is by creating a front end/back end database. This bit I can do by using the split tool provided in Access :)

However how would I go about restricting with some users can do or cant do?

any help/guidance is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Excel Facts

Test for Multiple Conditions in IF?
Use AND(test, test, test, test) or OR(test, test, test, ...) as the logical_test argument of IF.
You would need to look at setting up usergroups and permissions, is the database a mdb or accdb format?

Depending on how much you need to secure it, you can create multiple front ends. I have a couple databases that dont have any information in them that really needs to be secured, so I just remove the buttons for them, close down the nav pane, lock it down to only form view, and set it to open on just that form. Is it secure? No but unless someone really wants to mess with things, its enough.

The database is a .mdb although I'm working in Excel 2007.

How would I go about setting up user groups and permissions?

I'm not that great with Databases and Access, is this something that is fairly simple to set up in Access?

Thanks

OK you need to then custom the Quick Access Toolbar to add in the Wizard to deal with User Level Security Group Wizard.

Select the Icon to the right of the quick access toolbar and then More commands, then change the Popular to all commands then search down for User Level Security Wizard and in this area you have some choices to help you sort it out.

I would take a copy of the database and place in several temp folders and then explore both option to see which suits your needs, as some organisations place different security systems on Folders and Drives.

Using the built-in User Level Security requires you to really have a grasp of how it works before implementing.

See: How I use Microsoft Access User-Level Security
This is a whitepaper written by Jack MacDonald. This document describes his methods for using Access database security.
** A definite "must read" for anyone wanting to learn about how to implement Access's built-in User-Level Security. **

Note: The User Level security has been dropped in the new 2007/2010 ACE (.accdb) database format. I would urge you to consider a different method.

Check out this example: Boiler Plate Database
This is a moderately advance database that incorporates a number of functions such as 1) user logon 2) table reattachment 3) user tracking 4) how to control access via the use of modal switchboards and more. FYI: Username = admin; Password = admin.

When you look to open a database so you can see the tables etc when they are normally restricted from view you need to hold down the Ctrl and double click the database to open it, do not let go of the Ctrl key until it opens. Then you can view the tables, queries etc.
