AUTOMATIC PERIODIC DATA ENTRY

I'm just starting to use Excel. I have a worksheet with dates down column A, for example 1-Jan, 2-Jan, etc all the way to 31-Dec. Column B is for a constant number, which should be entered on the first day of each month. Can this be done automatically as each date passes?

In January, only 1-Jan would have a value entered, the rest would be blank. On 1-Feb another value would automatically be entered.

Any help would be appreciated.

Which came first: VisiCalc or Lotus 1-2-3?
Dan Bricklin and Bob Frankston debuted VisiCalc in 1979 as a Visible Calculator. Lotus 1-2-3 debuted in the early 1980's, from Mitch Kapor.
Hi Map,

Not quite sure what you mean, but does this serve. In B1 enter the formula: =IF(DAY(A1)=1,5,"") and copy down. That will put a 5 against each first day of the month. Amend formula to show what your constant number is.

Hi again,

Just re-read your question. If you don't want the 5 (or whatever constant you want) entering until the date is reached then enter in B1 : =IF(TODAY()>=A1,IF(DAY(A1)=1,5,""),"") and copy down.
