balancing data?

I’m trying to create a "balance sheet"

Basically I would have a set of (16) numbers

I would like to take those numbers and put those into (4) groups of (4) that all equal the same total value (or as close as possible)

Can anyone tell me where to start?

Thanks in advance for any reply.

I would say that the stating point is to add the numbers ("sum of 16"), then divide by r, getting an answer ("sum of 4"). Now, each of the four groups you select must equal the "sum of 4". Examples:
Say "sum of 16 = 32. Then, 32/4 = 8, so that "sum of 4" = 8 in each case.
Say "sum of 16" = 31. Then, 31.4 = 7.75, so that "sum of 4" = 8, 8, 8, and 7.
Say "sum of 16" = 26. Then, 25/4 = 6.25, so that "sum of 4" = 6, 6, 6, and 7.
The above is the starting point you asked for.
