I have a large file over 55,000 lines that has been giving me trouble when i attmept to copy down a complex formula on all of the rows. I want to separate the file into more managable pieces. Mabye 5,000 lines each. The only problem is that I dont want to arbitrarily separate the file. It has groupings by employee number. How can I make the file separate but not break up in the middle of a batch of the same employee number.

Employee Number. Name, Amount

Can you do it visually? I.e. use the Name box to select 1:5000, then just drag down till you see a new employee number? Otherwise can you use Data->Group and Outline to group on the employee number to help in finding the beginning and end of each number. Otherwise, you could create a formula down another column that tells you if you are at the end of the employee. Otherwise you could have a macro do it for you.

55,000 is very large, almost hitting Excel's limit. Maybe want to consider switching to something like Access for something of this size.

If you would like a macro, just let us know, someone would be happy to do it.
