Calculating the average of the column next to specific cells

Hi, I have a question on how to do the following -

For example, I have 2 columns called A and B. In column B, values x, y, and z are there in a random order. In column A, a different number is matched to each cell in col B. I would like to calculate the average of the numbers in col A matched to all of the x's in col B (and the same for the y's and z's). How can I do this? Thanks ?

Perhaps try the AVERAGEIF function?

Another way would be to use a Pivot Table
