What I am trying to do is create create a formula that will calculate the number of employees that worked during a given month. I would think a countif would be the solution, but I am having trouble.

Excel Facts

Show numbers in thousands?
Use a custom number format of #,##0,K. Each comma after the final 0 will divide the displayed number by another thousand
Hi,

First, we need to understand how you determine whether an employee worked in a particular month. Other than having the start-end time include the month you are asking about, is it possible for an employee to be listed more than once for a particular month? If so, would you want to count that employee only once?

As for the function to use, SUMPRODUCT would probably do it. That function works like SUMIF, but you can set more than one criteria. We just need to clarify exactly what that criteria is.

One way...

Use cells to hold the date range:
  • G2 = lower date boundary = 1/1/2011
  • H2 = upper date boundary = 1/31/2011
Then:

=SUMPRODUCT(--(G2>=A2:A6),--(H2<=C2:C6))
