I'd like to make my own symbols. This would allow me to datasort images that I create which is otherwise not possible. Does anyone know what suffix composes a symbol and how I can make and insert my own?

Links? Where??
If Excel says you have links but you can't find them, go to Formulas, Name Manager. Look for old links to dead workbooks & delete.
Unless I'm missing something you could always use one of the Wingdings fonts. You can sort those alphabetically, ascending or descending.

Does that help?

Thank you for responding: Let me clarify my question: Let's say I'd like to make an image of a ping pong paddle (an image that is not available in stock wingdings). Is there a way I could draw a ping pong paddle in some program and then insert it as a wingding?

Don't forget that if you were to want to share the file with anyone, you would need to provide them with the font file(s) and install the fonts on their machine.
