Cannot update reference within a formula with drag anymore

hi

I have a spreadsheet. If I enter =A1 in cell B1 and press enter it returns the contents of A1
If I press F2 on cell B1 a blue border appears around A1 which I used to be able to drag to another cell to update the reference in the formula.
Instead all that happens is the edit formula exitts and selects the cell A1

I have Options > Advanced > 'Enable fill handle and cell drag and drop' ticked. The blue border shows the drag and drop border and the mouse changes to the move/expand icon but it doesn't do it - it just exits the edit and selects a cell. It works fine in other workbooks so presumably some odd setting has been altered.

Any ideas what is causing this?

Excel Joke
Why can't spreadsheets drive cars? They crash too often!
Which version of Excel is it?
Also, is it every sheet in that workbook, or just a specific one (or few)?

Hi

It's Microsoft® Excel® for Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2208 Build 16.0.15601.20148) 64-bit

and yes it's every sheet including if I add new sheets. As I say it's not every workbook - if I create a new workbook it works but if I save the offending workbook as a new file (and/or new file type .xlsb .xslm) it still doesn't work

thanks

Is there code in the workbook that doesn't work?

Is there code in the workbook that doesn't work?
Hi

Ahh interesting - I have saved it as .xlsx closed and reopened and it now works. I will go through the VBA (thankfully not much of that to filter through) and find the offending issue!

many many thanks!
