can't select cells, box instead of a pointer

my pointer is gone and has been replaced by a box. i can't select cells anymore.

Could you say which Application (Excel, Word etc.) you are referring to and the version, please? I guess it may be Excel because you mention 'cells' but there are tables in Word.
Is it the same for all workbooks and all worksheets?

I am pretty sure it is an Excel question. It was originally posted in the Excel forum, but I moved it here because it could be a "techincal" issue.

Could the cursor be stuck in 'multi-select' mode (or whatever it is called)?
Try pressing F8 or the Esc key.
