In exce 2003 and earlier versions, one could make an embeeded chart float in its ownd window by right clicking the chart and selecting "Chart Window".

Where is that option in excel 2007 ?

Excel Facts

How to find 2nd largest value in a column?
MAX finds the largest value. =LARGE(A:A,2) will find the second largest. =SMALL(A:A,3) will find the third smallest
It was removed when the chart model was changed. Annoying as it was a great way to position userforms.

EXCEL 2007 made me hate to work with charts. Shaky interface and no Macro recorder output either. Were the MS people in a rush to market the product before they could actually finish it properly ? Is EXCEL 2010 better ?

While on the subject, I swear I saw a graph accidently popup in its own window while testing some unrelated API code some time ago :) I'll see if I can find that workbook

2010 is quite a lot better (though not perfect) - the macro recorder works for most things now. I'd be very interested if there is a way to get the old EXCELE window back!

Have fliped though my old projects but can't remember where I saw this happening. As I said it was accidental and if had known that the EXCELE window was removed in excel 2007 I would have explored this further.

Can one recreate a similar thing with VBA ? I know one could place a picture of the chart in a userform but that would result in a static chart. I guess one could use the sheet change and calculate events of the worksheet holding the chart source data to update the chart picture in the userform but still the user wouldn't be able to select the chart elements in the userform.

This is interesting - I was thinking maybe if one could duplicate the chart and use the SetParent API window it would probably achieve a very close result.

Am learning charts and looked into charts in UserForms too, and couldn't find any way other than copied picture of a chart GIF/JPG.

So Excel 2007 seems stuck with embedded charts in a worksheet. Am doing numerous charts on a sheet. At least I am able to move the charts around almost like a UserForm using click, drag, drop on screen.

But I have not been able to find an easy way to view live data in one screen, while viewing on an 2nd monitor the charts linked to that data.

Seems to take two workbooks using Menu - "View, Arrange All, Tiled" to see both workbooks running at same time linked to same instance of Excel. But that is only if Windows has set both monitors together as non-extended mode. Can't figure any other way to link the two easily while seeing them on separate monitors.

Why not just open two windows on the same file, and stretch the app across both monitors?

Not sure I understand. Do you mean open one excel file in one instance of Excel. Then in an other window (different monitor), using a new instance of Excel to open the same file?

That second window would be read only and it does not seem to update when I change the 1st one.

No - I mean open the file in one application instance. Stretch the app window across both monitors, then open a new window on the same file, and arrange one workbook window on each monitor.

We had this discussion in another thread (http://www.mrexcel.com/forum/showthread.php?t=575223); you stretch Excel's one and only application window across two monitors, and then arrange multiple windows of the same workbook (in this case) across that one application window.

EDIT: What rory said ...
