Checking validation on a column of URLs

Hello - very quick question this and I suspect it's possible, but I can't find out how.

I have a column of hyperlinks, one per cell, around 1,000 of them in all. I need to check whether each and every link is valid - basically, if it opens a web page, bingo, if it's broken, curses.

As an added annoyance, some of the links are to PDfs.

Is there any way to do this in excel without having to click each one to find out if it works?

Thanks in advance,
Chris.
