Classify soil pH in Excel

Sorry for being so direct but what I need is something like this:
In excel (2007) I will enter some soil properties.
When I enter the value of the property (pH in the case) I would like Excel to give the classification of the pH in the cell immediately to the right of the value I entered.
For instance if the value I enter is between
pH 6,6 to 7,3
I would like NEUTRAL to appear in the cell immediately to the right of the value I enter.
If its between
pH 7,4 to 7,8
I would like SLIGTHLY ALCALINE to appear in the cell immediately to the right of the value I enter.
And so on, for the various pH classes between 0 and 14
Can this be done in Excel?

Yes. I'd recommend using a LOOKUP function.

The syntax is as follows:

=LOOKUP(B2,{0,8},{"Acid","Base"})

Granted that is overly simplified, but can add and modify as you see fit.

Things to note, the first array (the one with the numbers) must always be in ascending order. You also must always have the same number of values in array 1 (the numbers) as you do in the second array (the pH classification).

The lookup starts at whatever number you put in there so for example purposes, if you wanted to make the neutral range big:

=LOOKUP(B2,{0,6,8},{"Acid","Neutral","Base"})

if the pH was 6, then it would return neutral. 7 would also return neutral and so would 7.9. Not until you hit 8 would it change to return a base. Hope that's enough to get you started!
