column headers appear as number instead of letter

Tools/Options, General tab, tick R1C1 Reference style.
 

Excel Facts

Links? Where??
If Excel says you have links but you can't find them, go to Formulas, Name Manager. Look for old links to dead workbooks & delete.
Go to Tools>Options. On the General tab, deselect the R1C1 style setting

Go to TOOLS/OPTIONS and click on the GENERAL tab. Clear the check box R1C1 Reference Style.

Go into Tools/Options/General and un-check R1C1 Reference Style
