I need to combine monthly income statements from individual Excel files into one spreadsheet that shows each month per column. The issue I'm having is that the revenues and expenditures aren't consistent each month, so a basic cut and paste doesn't help. I'm certain Excel has something smart to handle this...please advise. Thanks!

Remove leading & trailing spaces
Save as CSV to remove all leading and trailing spaces. It is faster than using TRIM().
One possibility is you could build a master file with all 12 months and a total already mapped out for your columns and your expenses down the left side. Have all possible expenses listed. then do a vlookup or sumif statement pulling it in from the individual files. Screen shot below is your master file. And say your January data is in january tab.

=SUMIF('january'!$a:$a,Master!a4,'january'!b:b)
or
=vlookup('master'!a4,'january'!a:b:,2,false)
