Comments acting odd

This is an oddball question but:
I find in opening some but not all files, the comments are all visible when they should have been hidden and then when I try to hide them that option is not on the list of commands.
All it offers me is edit or delete. As I said this is happening, on most but not all files.
Is there an option that I might have checked or unchecked accidentally?
It is really annoying to open a file and see a column full of cells with open comments that can't be hidden.

Any ideas would be welcome

Excel Facts

Copy PDF to Excel
Select data in PDF. Paste to Microsoft Word. Copy from Word and paste to Excel.
Have you checked under File > Options > Advanced > then scroll to the "Display" section and look at the settings under "For cells with comments, show:" And then check the option buttons found there?
