Comparing similar but not exact text?

I often get lists of businesses and need to compare them against our existing customer list. We may have ABC Widget Company in our list, and the new list could have ABC Widget Co. or just ABC Widget. Is there a way to compare text in a cell and return a true/false value if the text in those cells are close but not exact?

My only other idea is to create a LEFT function for each cell for 5 or so characters and compare "ABC W" to "ABC W". This may work in most cases but won't work with "The Widget Co" vs. "Widget Company, The".

Why can't spreadsheets drive cars? They crash too often!
Have a look at the find function if it returns a number you have a match, look at search too one of them is not case sensitive
