I want to format a cell with color if it is not blank. There are many different values which may be in this column, so I can't just format for specific events.

Excel Facts

What is the shortcut key for Format Selection?
Ctrl+1 (the number one) will open the Format dialog for whatever is selected.
Use a "Formula Is" Conditional Format using the formula...

=NOT(ISBLANK(ref))

where ref is a cell reference. See the Excel Help topic for "Highlight cells that meet specific conditions".
