Office Version
  1. 365
  2. 2019
  3. 2016
  4. 2013
Platform
  1. Windows
So
1, 2, 3 etc. is a top level task
1.1, 2.1, 3.1 etc. is the next level down
1.1.1, 2.1.1, 3.1.1 etc. is the lowest level

How do I get the conditional formatting to colour as below?

Excel Facts

Bring active cell back into view
Start at A1 and select to A9999 while writing a formula, you can't see A1 anymore. Press Ctrl+Backspace to bring active cell into view.
Use this formula to get the number of "."
Excel Formula:
=LEN(C25)-LEN(SUBSTITUTE(C25,".",""))
Use that in conditional formatting.

How do you apply that for each of the level/colours?

for dark blue:
Excel Formula:
=LEN(C25)-LEN(SUBSTITUTE(C25,".",""))=0

for lighter blue:
Excel Formula:
=LEN(C25)-LEN(SUBSTITUTE(C25,".",""))=1

for still lighter blue:
Excel Formula:
=LEN(C25)-LEN(SUBSTITUTE(C25,".",""))=2
