Hello to all

Newbie question here.

I do the tracking of disciplinarian action for employees. The majority of the employees are not on any warnings, but some are  . On my spreadsheet I have the drop off date. What I want is when the date arrives ( their warning expires) is to turn red to alert me that I need to advise them they are off their warning. I have come up with the following:
Condition 1 Cell value is less than or equal to =today() format color red
Condition 2 Cell value is greater than or equal to =today() format color white

My problem is when I use format painter the cells that have no date also turn red, and I would like to keep them clear until a drop off date is supplied (if necessary). Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
TIA
