i want to make something come up in a different colour depending on the number in the cell above. eg if it says 10 in the cell above and i put it 11 in the cell below i want it to come up in red font because 11 is above 10. and in green if its less than 10. and in orange if its the same. but i need this to apply for a long list of cells and it takes too long to do it one by one

Excel Facts

How to find 2nd largest value in a column?
MAX finds the largest value. =LARGE(A:A,2) will find the second largest. =SMALL(A:A,3) will find the third smallest
You don't need to do it for each cell individually.

If your range of data is B2:B100 then select that range and use the formula that will apply to the top cell (B2 in my example). So for instance you should use this formula for red

=B2>B1

That will automatically adjust for each cell....so if you apply that to B2:B100 then you'll get red in B54 if B54 > B53, red in B79 if B79 > B78 etc.

Select the cells (in my example A2:A4) and apply the Conditional Formatting formulas shown

410
Sheet1
Cells with Conditional Formatting
CellConditionCell FormatStop If True
A21. / Formula is =A2=A1Abc
A22. / Formula is =A2Abc
A23. / Formula is =A2>A1Abc

Tell us the EXACT range of cells you want to format and tell us what version of Excel you're using.
