Conditional STDEV

Hello everyone,

I have a table (2 columns and dynamic raws), column 1 is numbers and column 2 contains some names, like :
Column 1 ------ Column 2
1.2---------------John
2.3---------------Alex John
5.3---------------Mike
2-----------------Mike
1.4----------------John Jim
0------------------ <empty cell>
4------------------Jim
3.5-----------------Alex Mike Jim

I know how to calculate how many of "John" I have and what is the average for each of them: John 3 times with an average of (1.2+2.3+1.4)/3,

BUT how can I calculate Standard Deviation and/or variance for John based on these data in Excel?

I have tried DVAR, DSTDEV and ... no success

Any solution?

This works for me, must be array confirmed with Ctrl Shift Enter.

=STDEV(IF(ISNUMBER(SEARCH("john",B2:B9)),A2:A9))
