Conditional Sum using wild cards??

I have tried this conditional sum but receive 0 as the answer when I know it is not correct.

=SUM(IF($C$2:$C$63="WS-C650*",$G$2:$G$63,0)

Can wild cards be used in a conditional sum?

Should I be using a different function?

Why not use SUMIF?

=SUMIF($C$2:$C$63,"WS-C650*", $G$2:$G$63)
