Converting numeric cells into text

Im a total Excel newbie and I really need to know if it is possible to convert a lot of data held as numbers into text for a mail merge.

Ok, I have around 160 cells containing numeric figures.

I need to convert these numbers into text so that I can use them for a mail merge to print onto cheques.

Is there a quick way of doing this?

Select all the cells then goto Format|Cells|Choose Text
