Count number ob rows with a value

I am trying to count the number of cells (in one column) that has the word "Complete*" with the wildcard *

I tried: =COUNTIF(F11:F169, Complete*) and =COUNTIF(F11:F169, Complete) but a zero count was returned.

I also tried to count the cells that were empty: =COUNTIF(F11:F169, "") but a zero count was returned.

Should these two be returning a numeric count value?
