Hi all, had a search but couldn't find an answer to what I suspect will be a fairly simple solution.

All I am looking to do is count the number of times a number appears within in a given cell - so for example if A1 contains 123456111, I need a formula to count how many times the number 1 occurs, in this case - 4. I would also like to expand that to count within a range of cells if possible.

Many thanks for any advice given.

Excel Facts

Bring active cell back into view
Start at A1 and select to A9999 while writing a formula, you can't see A1 anymore. Press Ctrl+Backspace to bring active cell into view.
This formula works for single number.

=LEN(A1)-LEN(SUBSTITUTE(A1,1,""))
