Count occurrences of two options in a particular category

Hi,

I am trying to do the following:

If column A contains XYX, then count how many times Y occurs in column D.

Can this be done?

Can you provide some sample data? Is the string always length of 3 and it's the middle character?

This is what I'm trying to put together - and the data for each value comes from the other tab.

I don't see how the first picture related to the second. It's best if you can post some samples using XL2BB. Also include some expected results.
