COUNTIF not automatically updating?

Hi
I would be very grateful if someone can help me. I have set up drop down menus within a spreadsheet containing various text entries so only a set number of options can be selected. I then have a summary table set up using COUNTIF to count how many times each option is selected so I dont have to do so manually.

This has worked perfectly, however recently I expanded the selection and for some reason the COUNTIF function now only updates when I click in the formula bar and hit 'enter'. (i.e as if I am 'refreshing the formula').

Previously when new options were selected the running total updated automatically, and this is what I would like to continue. Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can ensure it upates automatically?

thanks

Excel Facts

Copy formula down without changing references
If you have =SUM(F2:F49) in F50; type Alt+' in F51 to copy =SUM(F2:F49) to F51, leaving the formula in edit mode. Change SUM to COUNT.
