Countif with len

My requirement is to count the no of cells that have a value of Length greater than 5. Have tried several ways but not getting the desired result.
Currently Using

= COUNTIF(B8:B1000, "(LEN(B8:B1000))>5" )

The above formula returns a zero whereas should return 311.

Try

=COUNTIF(B8:B1000,"?????*")

Only works with text, not numbers, dates, etc.

=SUMPRODUCT(((LEN(B8:B1000))>5)*1)

=SUMPRODUCT(((LEN(B8:B1000))>5)*1)
