By recording macro and cloning, I came up with the code appended below.
The resulting hyperlink works if the cell has http://xyz, but not if it has notes://xyz (I get "Cannot open the specified file" error.)
The notes://xyz syntax ia a URL for Lotus Notes documents that has been registered and works in IE and in desktop shortcuts.
SOMETIMES it has worked in Excel, but only on rare occasions when I have manually created the hyperlink and typed the url into the Address field. I cannot figure out what the gating factors are to making it work.
Here's the macro code:
If ActiveCell.Value <> "" And ActiveCell.Value <> " " Then
Selection.Hyperlinks.Delete
ActiveSheet.Hyperlinks.Add Anchor:=Selection, Address:=ActiveCell.Value, _
TextToDisplay:=ActiveCell.Value
End If
