cutting and pasting (excel newbie)

this may be a really dumb question, forgive me!

I have an excel file containing genealogy data. I've been trying to record a macro to copy the contents of every second line in one column to the adjacent right column.

I just can't seem to get it to work.

What I would ideally like to do is to select every second cell in the column, then cut and then paste them to the right. But excel tells me it can't cut this type of selection.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

G'day Linda in Sydney,

A quick solution is to enter this formula into the first cell of the second column and drag it down the column.(Assumes your original data is in column A)

=IF(MOD(ROW()/2,1)=0,A1,"")

Every second entry will appear in the second column. Then just select the whole column, copy and paste values into the same place to remove the formulas.

Dirty but it's a quick fix.

- thanks, with a bit of fiddling to put in the relevant row and column numbers I can get it to work for one cell

what do you mean by 'drag it down the column'?

Sorry if this is another dumb question:
:wink:
